WHY DO WE WATCH MOVIES?

The following content is a transcript of the video essay of the same name from the youtube channel CINEMA BEYOND ENTERTAINMENT (  Link ).  I urge you all to first read this essay and if you found it not-so-interesting then watch the video. The purpose of this whole exercise is to provide you an insight into the art called cinema and the reason behind out attachment (and obsession as well) to it.  So why do we watch movies? When the avenues of entertainment have become more diverse than ever,  When the next cool thing is just one click away,  When the social media is allowing us to be the hero of our own story,  When buying a movie ticket can cost more than a week’s grocery and you don’t even know how that movie will turn out,  Then why do we watch movies? We watch movies because they can make us experience moments that are outside of our everyday lives,  They allow us  - to step in the shoes of a soldier and witness the horrors of war, - Walk...

ADMIRATION: An Evaluation

ADMIRATION: An Evaluation  I have always been reluctant in reacting happily to my praise, especially during large gatherings or when it is done by close ones. One of the reasons why I don't like to celebrate birthday is also the same odd feeling when being in focus due to good cause.  WHY PEOPLE ARE ADMIRED ?  1.  Because they have something worth praise - like someone who sings or acts or speaks well. also some academic distinctions like clearing any reputed entrance exam i.e. JEE ADVANCED or getting a job. 2. To lift people up - often it is received by any friend or favourite teacher or by our parents and grand parents. also when a participant like some player or performer is feeling low, he/she is admired to regain the ground.  3. Celebrity status - this is often in case of some extraordinary skill or art like Sachin Tendulkar, Arijit Singh to name a few. but then again this is extension of point no 1 with the large base of admirers.  4. Flattery or B...

Main Bas Likhna Chahta hoon: A poetry

Hey all, Almost one and half month before I wrote a poetry. As the title suggests its about my desire to just write.  Please enjoy the poetry, the discussion and inspirations will be discussed in some other post.  MAIN BAS LIKHNA CHAHTA HOON…

“WHERE TIRELESS STRIVING STRETCHES ITS ARMS”

Disclaimer - with due respect to Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore and his classic poem ‘where the mind is without fear’         Since my childhood, I am reading and praising this everlasting poem. Since my teenage years I have adopted one of its lines as my motto ‘where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection’          Lately, I have come to realise that this line needs an alteration, by removing the final word.  PERFECTION: an extravagance!         Perfection, of all the words that kept motivating me all these years has something different. When I hear this word, I drown myself to a level of geek from my existing level, that of a student.           For past 4 years I have been an aspirant of civil services (preferably IAS) and this word has done more damage than anything else to me. earlier every time I studied something I wanted to do a Ph.D. in that. For instance, if I stud...
